University of Michigan Regents passed a resolution Thursday honoring Regent Sarah Goddard Power, who committed suicide last month by jumping off the Burton Memorial Tower.
Power's chair at the regents meeting table remained empty on Thursday, while her colleagues stood in a moment of silence to remember her. "And while we are diminished by her loss, it is nonetheless enriched and ennobled for her having been with us," said U-M President Harold Shapiro. "While we are all saddened, we are also encouraged that her message and example will live with us always."
Power, who was 51 when she died on March 24, was described by Shapiro as a dedicated and tireless worker for the university, the community and society. Power is survived by her husband, Philip, a newspaper publisher, and the couple's 5 year-old son, Nathan.
