Ann Arbor, Michigan
Age 84, died suddenly Monday, December 14, 1987, at University Hospital. He was born June 27, 1903, the son of Byron and Geneva (Hacklander) Purchase. He had been an Ann Arbor resident since 1923, originally from Holland, Michigan and Addison, Michigan. He married the former Virleah Felter of Addison on April 9, 1927. Mr. Purchase was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1923. He founded Purchase Radio in 1928, and later founded the Purchase Camera Shop in Ann Arbor. A licensed radio amateur since 1929, he was known internationally as W8RP. Mr. Purchase was former President of the Ann Arbor Civic Orchestra, played cello in a string quartet, started the Ann Arbor Band, and was also active in local community organizations. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Ola Jeanne) McCollough of Saline. Two brothers, Fred & John, preceded him in death. Funeral service will be Thursday, December 17, 10:30 a.m., at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Robert B. Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in Wolf Creek Cemetery (near Adrian). Memorial tributes may be made to the First Baptist Church. Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel, 7-9 pm this evening and Wednesday, 3-5 and 7-9 pm.
