Watkins, Sharon Cooney (Mrs. Spud)
Ann Arbor, MI
Age 53, died April 5, 1989 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Mrs. Watkins, a graduate of the University of Michigan, was a seventeen year employee of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. During that time, she performed a wide variety of tasks, serving as Director of Elections, Secretary to the Ann Arbor Board of Education, and Assistant to the Superintendent. Her most recent position was that of Policy Analyst and Communication Specialist. She was the popular editor of "The Grapevine" a system-wide employee newsletter. Her writing was graced by her wit and sensitivity. In addition to her regular employment, Mrs. Watkins was an active participant in community and professional affairs such as the Michigan Council for Women in Educational Administration, the Democratic Party, and the Board of the Hands-On-Museum. She is survived by her husband, Spurgeon Watkins; two sons, Kevin and Kelly; one daughter-in-law, Sandra; one brother, Gerard Cooney of Ontario, CA; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8, at 3 pm at the MUEHLIG CHAPEL, with the Ven. Dr. Robert L. Potts officiating. The family will receive friends at the Muehlig Chapel on Friday, April 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Memorial tributes may be made to the Emerson Powrie Scholarship Fund (Ann Arbor Public Schools) or the Ann Arbor Hands-On-Museum.
