Case of the mis-stashed Kerrytown cash solved

What appeared to have been a larceny of more than $1,000 from a Kerrytown shop has turned out to be only misplaced money.

On June 19, Marguerite Oliver reported to Ann Arbor police that $1,200 in business cash and $2,000 in checks were missing from her purse in the Pastabilities food store at 212 E. Kingsley St. The loss occurred during business hours and the presumption was that a sneak thief had slipped into the shop, stolen the envelope containing the cash and checks and fled.

“Before we reported it to police, we searched everywhere in that office,” said Oliver, manager of the pasta shop. “We thought the envelope with the money in it might have been accidently thrown away. I even met the Kerrytown rubbish man at 4 in the morning and got his permission to rummage through the trash.”

The frantic searches proved futile.

Before writing the loss off, Oliver decided to make one more hunt of the office. Finally, while poring through a cabinet which contained paper folders, she spotted a familiar envelope.

“It was the money. I had taken the envelope out of my purse for something and somehow it had dropped between two folders. It fit perfectly. I closed the metal file and never thought about it again. It was such a relief to find the money,” Oliver said.
