When the Kansas, Arkansas & Texas Railroad train pulled out of Detroit on Jan. 11, 1951, six Ann Arbor area men were aboard.
They had just signed up for four-year hitches in the Air Force to sidestep being drafted by the Army. None of them had a strong wish to serve as a "ground pounder" in Korea, where 55,000 Americans would die before the conflict ended.
