MUCC conservation officer award goes to Pioneer grad
Ann Arbor native Mike Bailey, now a Detour resident, has received the Conservation Officer of the Year Award from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. He is described as having a lifelong interest in the outdoors and a clean environment.
Bailey’s interest in becoming a conservation officer developed in junior high school. When he became eligible to test for conservation officer at age 21, positions were unavailable, so he worked as a volunteer conservation officer for 12 years. He sought jobs which would give him conservation law enforcement experience.
After graduating from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School in 1973, Bailey worked for the Department of Natural Resources Parks Division form 1973-76 and later another seasonal job with the DNR’s Wildlife Division. Later he gained experience with the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Department and Huron Clinton Metropolitan Authority. He also was a state trooper.
Bailey now is a conservation officer for the DeTour-Drummond District 4 Law Enforcement Division. He is credited with a major increase in equipment for the district.
