Muncy, Ralph Waldo
Ann Arbor, MI
Age 89, died March 28, 1992 at University Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 30 at MUEHLIG CHAPEL, Ann Arbor, with coffee and tea to follow the service. In honor of Mr. Muncy, donations may be made to an organization or charity of the donor's choice. Mr. Muncy was born in Cedar, MI, April 26, 1902 the son of John Irvin and Maud Ackley Muncy. Mr. Muncy was a descendant of Elisha Congdon and original settler of Chelsea, MI. A graduate of Ann Arbor High School in 1919, he received a BS in forestry from the University of Michigan in 1923 and later received a life teaching certificate from the school of education. Mr. Muncy practiced forestry as a private consultant and as an employee of the United States Forest Service until 1940 when he returned to Ann Arbor. Subsequently, he was engaged in civil engineering; employed by General Motors Proving Ground; Great Lakes Steel Corporation, and McNamee, Porter and Seeley Civil Engineers of Ann Arbor. Mr. Muncy is known best for his ardent activities in the Socialist Labor Party. He was a candidate of that party on a number of occasions and also served as Chairman of the State Central Committee in Michigan. Mr. Muncy has published a number of articles and papers on various technical subjects, he has written a great deal on Socialism and was contributor to various Socialist publications. Mr. Muncy was an avid genealogist and belonged to The Historical Society of Michigan, The Washtenaw County Historical Society, and The Thomas Minor Society. Mr. Muncy is survived by his wife Lydia Baird Muncy; a sister, Mrs. Robert Farrington of Mountpelier and her daughters; a daughter Margaret Cotter of Traverse City; grandson, Van Cotter and wife Irene of Trenton, NJ; granddaughter, Jen Butcher and husband Ken of Hendersonville, NC; and great-grandchildren, Lisa and Jeffrey Cotter, and Jonah Samuel and Steven Butcher.
