Formerly of Ypsilanti
Age 80, died Friday February 26, 1993 in Orlando, FL. He was born May 14, 1912 in Lawton, MI the son of Nate and Fannie (Maxwell) Abbott. He received his B. S. degree physical education from Western Michigan University in 1936. On March 19, 1937 he married Fannie Holden, and she preceded him in death on June 5, 1984. Mr. Abbott came to Ypsilanti in 1955 and was employed by the City of Ypsilanti, where he was Director of Parks and Recreation, retiring in 1972. His leadership built the roots of baseball programs that hundreds of youth participate in today. He was a former state chairman of Little League, and district commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball, Connie Mack Baseball, and the Michigan Amateur Association. He also served as president of the Michigan Hockey Assoc., and director of the U.S. Hockey Assoc. Mr. Abbott joined the Ypsilanti Optimist Club in 1959 and was elected president in 1960. He was past Lt. Governor and Governor of Michigan District of Optimist International, and past International VP of Optimist International. Survivors include: one son, John (Carol) Abbott of Thousand Oaks, CA; one daughter, Katherine (Michael) Kearns of Orlando, FL; and three grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Abbott, and Michelle and Kelly Kearns. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at MOORE MEMORIAL CHAPEL (Stark Funeral Service). Burial will follow in Washtenong Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6:30 p.m. Monday.
