Coverage of Gelman cleanup inconsistent

As Scio Township residents troubled over the Gelman Science proposal of possibly contaminating Honey Creek, we are outraged at the coverage of Gelman Sciences profits and plans to double revenue. The Dec. 18 article reported that Gelman Science’s President Kim Davis stated, “The firm’s groundwater pollution troubles are mostly history.”

Davis obviously was unaware of the meeting Dec. 16 with Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials and Scio Township residents. Davis also missed The News’ article on Dec. 17 reviewing the meeting (“Residents want aggressive measures in Scio cleanup”).

We think this was misleading to the local public in regard to the groundwater pollution problem. Isn’t this misrepresenting to potential investors? What if those potential investors wanted to buy a home along Honey Creek or own property in Scio Township?

As a young couple who’s worked hard to be a part of this community, we are extremely agitated by the inconsistency in The Ann Arbor News coverage of GSI’s groundwater cleanup efforts and GSI’s potential profits.

It’s frustrating for us to listen to Lansing officials who are unaware of the latest data for Gelman’s ground-water cleanup capabilities. MDNR officials and GSI are in a holding pattern regarding future modifications to the discharge permit. Meanwhile, local residents faced with looming contamination risk are exposed to conflicting coverage. As regular readers of The Ann Arbor News, we expect higher journalistic standards. Let’s not add insult to injury by subjecting the local community to further confusion over the very real ground water pollution problems.

We would like to be as optimistic about the quality of our ground water as GSI is to their future profits. Martin Nadrowski, Lynn Nadrowski Ann Arbor
