Nicolas to seek Rivers' House seat

No sooner had state Rep. Lynn Rivers, D-Ann Arbor, made it official and announced she was running for Congress than a candidate emerged to replace her in the state House.

Ann Arbor City Councilman Peter Nicolas. D-4th Ward, said Monday that he will run in Rivers’ 53rd District.

Nicolas, an economist at the University of Michigan’s Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, outlined his platform of more spending on infrastructure, such as roads, changes in educational funding and welfare reform.

The state 53rd district, which takes up the southern part of Ann Arbor and all of Pittsfield Township, is about 60 percent Democratic.

His opponent in the race is likely to be former Mayor Liz Brater, who indicated she might announce this week she is running for the same state House district. Though both are Democrats, the two clashed constantly while on Ann Arbor City Council.

Nicolas said he would concentrate on the issues. “I try to pay little attention to who is running against me,” he said.

Rivers is running for the seat to be vacated at the end of this year by U.S. Rep. William D. Ford.

She already faces several opponents in the Democratic primary, including Ford’s administrative aide, David Geiss, and local attorney Fulton Eaglin.

Two Republicans have announced they will compete for the job: John Schall, a labor consultant, and Cynthia H. Wilbanks, one-time aide to former U.S. Rep. Carl Pursell.
