Hillary Rodham Clinton has been seen around town lately, with members of her fan club who are wearing T-shirts with the photo and signature of the first lady.
Clinton personally sent the signed photograph to her admirers in the Ann Arbor chapter of the national Hillary Rodham Clinton Fan Club.
“We were so pleased with the photo that we asked, ‘Why not use the photo on a T-shirt?’ ” said Janine Easter, coordinator of the Ann Arbor chapter.
Established in Ann Arbor nearly a year ago, the non-profit club now has a membership of 270, one of the largest chapters in the countiy, Easter said.
Ann Arbor is one of 45 chapters nationwide and one of four chapters in Michigan. The others are in Battle Creek, Genesee and Oakland counties. Total national membership is close to 6,000.
Clinton’s first fan club was chartered by Eugene and Ruth Love, then-residents of Silver Springs, Md., in September 1992 at a Democratic Club meeting.
The organization is non-partisan - two Republicans are chapter coordinators - and welcomes anyone who wants to join, Easter said. The fan club’s purposes are:
■ To show respect and admiration for Hillary Rodham Clinton.
■ To support the projects on which Clinton is or will be working.
■ To support President Bill Clinton’s programs.
Individuals interested in buying a T-shirt or learning more about the local fan club and its activities are invited to attend a Spring Potluck from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Bums Park Senior Citizens Center, 1320 Baldwin Ave.
Featured at the event will be speakers, an update on group activities, food and chocolate chip cookies made from Clinton’s own recipe.
Club membership is $3. T-shirts cost $10 for members and $12 for non-members. For more information on how to purchase the T-shirts or on the potluck, call 741-1062.
