BRIARWOOD RUN

'Classic Briarwood Run'

Runners take on race's traditional conditions

By HALLIE CHALMERS

NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

It was a characteristic day for the Briarwood Run. The air was frigid and  snow fell. But it didn’t deter the runners who showed up for Sunday’s 20th running of the race.

“This was a classic Briarwood Run, but we didn’t have the rain, sleet, thunder and lightning of two years ago,” Ann Arbor’s Carolin .Dick said. “... It was cold and a little bit windy, but that keeps you going faster.”

Dick was the overall female winner in the 5-kilometer run, completing the course in 21 minutes, 13 seconds. Dick, 49, knew she was in the top finishers, but said she didn’t expect to win.

“I thought others were up ahead of me,” Dick said. “I guess that’s why you should always show up. You never know.”

Race director Mike Bums said , attendance was down this year as 900 runners participated, in contrast to the usual 2,000-3,000.

Ann Arbor women took the top spots in all three races. Dick won the 5K, Angela Funke won the 20K (1:28:56) and Shauna Sikorski took the 10K (41:47). The men’s winners were Metamora’s Evan Moore in the 10K (35:22), Bloomfield Hills’ John Cole in the 20K (1:14.42) and Toledo’s Denny Walerius in the 5K (18:12).

Here’s a rundown of the three races:

20K Race

For Cole, 36, the 20K was just one in a series of practices. Cole is training for the Cleveland Marathon on May 4.

“I feel like I was on schedule to run a good one here,” he said. “I’m not ecstatic with my time but it’s OK The first six miles didn’t bother me, but the last six miles were when I started noticing it.” Rochester’s Rich Power was second (1:15.24) and Marysville’s Joe Lasher finished third (1:16.29) Funke was first for the women, while Whitmore Lakes’ Wanda Gunderson placed second (1:30.28) and Ann Arbor’s Debbie Holland ran third (1:31.48)

10K Race

Ann Arbor’s Lester Wyborny almost bypassed Moore. Wyborny finished second (35:57), 35-hundreds of a second behind the winner. Clinton Township’s Frank Lagrasso was third (37:39). Ann Arbor’s Edmond Devine, 80, was the oldest competitor at the Briarwood Run. Devine finished 188th, beating several runners more than half his age (1:05.22).

Friends and family of Ypsilanti's Frank McMurry, including Melissa Loniewski (right) and Kaitnin McMurry (white hat), cheer him on as he nears the finish of Sunday's 10K.

In the women’s race, Ypsilanti’s Jennifer Rossi was second (42:50), just over a second behind Sikorski. Ann Arbor’s Donna Zobel was third (43:48).

5K Race

First-time winner Walerius, 18, said the weather didn’t bother him.

“I like it,” he said. “ I didn’t expect to come in first. There weren’t as many people here as usual.”

Saline’s Gariy Pinter was second (18:15), and Ann Arbor’s Peter Griess was third (18:25).

Ypsilanti’s Alexandra Cassar and Ann Arbor’s Danielle Choate tied for second (22:29).

Denny Walerius (left) of Toledo finished first in the men's 5K race, and John Cole of Bloomfield Hills took 1st place in the 10K.
