Dr. Joseph T. Kummer, a retired senior research scientist for Ford Motor Company, was called home on June 27, 1997. In his career which spanned over 40 years and which included 23 years at Ford, Dr. Kummer made many outstanding contributions to several fields, both theoretical and practical. His accomplishments included invention of the sodium-sulfur battery and major contributions to the scientific development of all aspects of automobile exhaust catalysts. Dr. Kummer was awarded 19 patents and published over 50 scientific papers during his long career. Born October 21, 1919 in Catonsville, Maryland, he attended Boy's Latin School in Baltimore, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and the John Hopkins University. He received his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering in 1945. He made his greatest contributions, however, to his family. During his retirement he was known as "Compu-gramps" for his many innovations towards raising the computer technical skills of his family and friends. He leaves to mourn, his wife Ruth: children Fred, Marian, David and Joseph; grandchildren Melissa, Nathan, Joy, Ian and Chelsea. He was always ready with advice and information. He will be missed by many who wish him peace, joy and happiness in his journey beyond this life. A funeral service will be held for family and friends at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Saline, Michigan at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 1997 with Rev. Fr. William J. Stevenson officiating.
