Saline seeks grant for marionettes
The city of Saline hopes a state grant can help it preserve and display Meredith Bixby's hand-crafted collection of marionettes.
City Council voted unanimously Monday night to pursue a $35,000 grant through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs while at the same time committing to a $35,000 cash or in-kind match from the city.
Bixby, who has agreed to donate his collection to the city if a suitable venue can be found, performed for countless school children during his 46-year career as a traveling puppeteer.
The city is still looking for a display site, and has discussed various options, including Saline's library and Union School.
