Devine, Elizabeth Palmer Ward

Elizabeth Palmer Ward DeVine, age 74, died Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at her home in Ann Arbor. Born in 1926, “Libby” DeVine was the daughter of the late Virginia Palmer Bradfield and Harold Lee Ward of Orchard Lake and Pontiac. She is the great-granddaughter of David Ward, an early graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and Charles H. Palmer, one of the early Regents of the University of Michigan. Libby attended Chatham Hall in Virginia and graduated from Kingswood School, Cranbrook in 1943. In 1948, she graduated from Smith College, Northampton, MA. After graduation from college, Libby taught English at Kingswood School, lived and worked in New York and San Francisco. In 1955, she married Edmond F. DeVine of Ann Arbor. They had four children, Elizabeth, Stephen, Michael and Suzanne. Libby was interested in a variety of issues, including animal welfare, historic preservation and wilderness conservation. She served on the board of the Humane Society of Huron Valley and the honorary board of the Bentley Historical Library. She delivered Meals on Wheels for years. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in Michigan, the Sigma Gamma Association, the Junior League of Birmingham, the Junior League of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Women’s City Club. Above all, Libby loved and valued her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Edmond; by her children, Elizabeth DeVine Wiseman (Tom) of Nashville, TN, Stephen Ward DeVine (Margaret) of Alexandria, VA, Michael Edmond DeVine (Lee) of Middletown, MD, and Suzanne Lee DeVine (John Koselka) of Ann Arbor; as well as her 12 grandchildren, Allison, Tom, Madeline, and Kate Wiseman, Peter and Benjamin DeVine, Francis, Edmond, James, Clare and Joseph Devine, and Elizabeth P. DeVine Koselka. Libby’s sister, Ann Ward Spaeth of Philadelphia also survives. Another sister, Virginia Ward Golding, predeceased her. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 3, 5-9 p.m. with Rosary at 8 p.m. at the MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL, Ann Arbor (734-663-3375). A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 4 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Ann Arbor.
