Milan, Pittsfield recall petitions fail

Supporters failed to meet deadline for May ballot

From News Staff Reports

The deadline came and went Friday, with no recall petitions filed against elected officials of the city of Milan and Pittsfield Township.

Derrick Jackson said supporters of both petition drives failed to meet Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline to get a recall issue on the May ballot. The groups have until May 5 to file for the August primary ballot.

In Milan, 363 valid signatures are required to get on the ballot; in Pittsfield Township the number is 2,246, according to Matt Yankee, a deputy clerk of Washtenaw County.

Each signature is good for only 90 days, so for the Aug. 8 ballot, petition circulators may have to do it all over again.

The ballot language approved by the Washtenaw County Election Commission is good for 180 days.

In Milan, City Council members Martha Churchill and Timothy Gibelyou are targeted for recall. Petitioners are unhappy with their votes in favor of severance pay for the city administrator and police chief.

In Pittsfield Township, Supervisor James Walter, Clerk Feliziana Meyer and Treasurer Christina Lirones are recall targets. Petitioners are citing their votes for their own salary increases and their alleged actions related to a Wal-Mart store proposed for the corner of US-12 and State Road.

Augusta Township voters will go to the polls on Feb. 28 to decide whether to remove Clerk Kathy Giszczak and Trustee Joann Kidder from office.

They are accused of backdating a request for a special meeting to avoid disclosing that the meeting violated Michigan's Open Meetings Act.
