Campbell, Jesse Lewis

Ann Arbor, Ml

On Tuesday evening, September 19, 2006 God called home his angel Jesse Lewis Campbell to be with the Lord.

Born September 5, 1941 in Starkville, MS. He was the son of the late Jimmie and Pearlie Campbell of Starkville, MS. Jesse resided in Ann Arbor, MI and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1960. Jesse was a track star,

"Speedy Blow" is what everyone called him. In 1962 Jesse married his high school sweetheart, Janet Alice Hill and to their union four daughters were bom, Karla, Kelly, Katina and Jami all of Ann Arbor, MI. Jesse worked at Chrylser Corporation for over ten years, before becoming an entrepreneur. He was one of the first African-Americans in Washtenaw County to own a Liquor Licensed convenience store in Ann Arbor called the "Barbeque King". Years later changing the name what we all know as "Mr. Rib", home of the famous "Soul on a Roll". Jesse’s love of food was not his only passion, he was also sought after for his spiritual and encouraging words of wisdom. Jesse was a memeber of Bethel AME Church for more than twenty years. Jesse was a compassionate, forgiving, dedicated, kind-hearted, and trusting man that we all knew and loved. Jesse leaves to cherish in his loving memory his wife, Janet; and his four daughters, Karla, Kelly (Issac) Brown, Katina and Jami. "Papa Jesse" know to his five granddaughters and four grandsons, Latese, Shalese, Jeffrey, Jeanika, Elijah, Blaise, Lashae, Jada, Sammy and Darren Jr.; in addition he also leaves to mourn his two sisters, Katie (Jerry) Greer of Ann Arbor, MI, and Ferry Dean Campbell of Boston, MA; two brothers, James Campbell and Roy (Charlene) Campbell, both of Ann Arbor, MI; one godchild, George Michael "Mikey" Hunter; and a host of nieces, newphews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and brother-in-law; Earl and Annie Johnson of Carson, CA. Jesse will be truely missed! Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Brown Chapel AME Church in Ypsilanti, MI. Family hour will begin at 10 a.m. Rev. Dr, Joseph Cousin will officiate. Burial will follow at United Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Plymouth, MI. There will be a visitation on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Nie Funeral Home in Ann Arbor, MI.
