Women in Film: Our Time Starts Now

When: March 29, 2018 at Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

What is it like to be a writer, director, storyteller, and woman in the film industry? How does the past, current, and potential future climate of filmmaking look for women working and teaching in the field? Join a panel of filmmakers as they discuss their experiences finding, creating, and telling stories.

The panel includes: Danni McClellan, a writer and director of short films who also works as an assistant director on feature films; Andrea Claire Morningstar, an Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker and radio producer; and Jasmine Rivera, a director, writer, producer, actor, and a 2014 Kresge Arts Fellow. The panel is moderated by Jennifer Proctor, filmmaker, media artist, co-founder of EDIT Media (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Teaching Media), and Associate Professor of Journalism and Screen Studies at University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Jen Proctor, moderatorJennifer Proctor is a filmmaker and media artist originally from San Rafael, California, and now in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Her award-winning found footage work examines the history of experimental film, Hollywood tropes, and the representation of women in cinema, and has screened around the world, including the Edinburgh Film Festival, Antimatter Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, LA FilmForum, South by Southwest, and Anthology Film Archives. She is the co-founder of EDIT Media (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Teaching Media). She is an Associate Professor of Journalism and Screen Studies at University of Michigan-Dearborn. 

 

Danni McClellan DavisDanni McClellan is a writer and director living in Detroit, Michigan. Her professional career began as a Production Assistant before quickly rising through the ranks and working as an Assistant Director. As a writer her scripts have been finalists in multiple nationally recognized screenwriting festivals including the Atlanta Film Festival.  After splitting time between New York, LA and Detroit, Danni founded her Detroit-based production company Stanislaus Films in early 2017, directing two short films before the end of the year. Her first comedy short, Heads/Tails, is currently finishing post-production and is anticipated to premiere at festivals later this year. Her next project is a horror short she is co-writing with local author Bryce David Salazar. 

 

Andrea Claire Morningstar is an Emmy nominated filmmaker working in both Detroit, Michigan and New Orleans, Louisiana. Andrea has taught filmmaking at Interlochen Center for the Arts, The Maine Media Workshops, University of Missouri - Columbia, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Milwaukee Public Schools and Detroit Future Schools. Her short films, photographs, installations and performances have exhibited in festivals and galleries in the US and abroad. She has also produced several stories for radio, print and web. Her passion for documentary work started with a radio piece called My Pen Pal, about a young girl’s unlikely friendship with a demonized leader of a foreign nation, which became a feature story on This American Life.

 

Jasmine RiveraJasmine Rivera is a director, writer, producer, and actor from Detroit, Michigan. As a narrative filmmaker she has written, directed and produced media via her company Anawim Productions as well as four narrative films including Nain Rouge, which won thesis honors at Columbia University, numerous awards for Best Short Film and Best Director and screened at film festivals around the country, including the Uptown/Detroit Independent Film Festival, Great Lakes International Film Festival, and Cinetopia Film Festival. Her latest narrative short is American Prophet, set in 1968 Detroit and based on the true story of peacemaker Bishop Thomas Gumbleton. Jasmine is the recipient of the Loreen Arbus Scholarship from the New York Women in Film and Television Organization, was a Junior Professional Media Fellow at the United Nations University, a Detroit Sundance Screenwriters Lab Fellow, and a recipient of the prestigious 2014 Kresge Arts Fellowship in Film Award.
