ANN ARBOR YPSILANTI READS AUTHOR EVENT
Acclaimed author William Poy Lee will make a special appearance in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area as part of Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads. His book, The Eighth Promise: An American Son’s Tribute To His Toisanese Mother has been chosen as the focus of the 2008 Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program.
On Friday, January 25 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Towsley Auditorium of the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College, he will discuss this book his own perspective on the Chinese-American experience. A booksigning will follow and the book will be on sale at this event, courtesy of Borders.

Craft: Chinese Paper Cutting
Delicate Chinese Paper Cutting is an art form which is created by hand cutting with a pair of scissors to achieve sophisticated pictures and designs with greater intricacy than machines can produce. Artist Xiaomei Cui will introduce you to this art form, show examples from her collection, and demonstrate how it is done.

What is modern China like today? Mary Gallagher, UM Assoc. Professor of Political Science, will discuss the political and social situations in the country that will host the 2008 Summer Olympics. Gallagher is also a faculty associate at the Center for Comparative Political Studies, the Center for Chinese Studies, and the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations. She received her PhD in politics in 2001 from Princeton University.

Held in conjunction with Michigan Television, the final film in this three-part PBS series chronicles how WWII changed life for Chinese Americans. Exclusion laws were repealed and, by the late 1960s, Chinese Americans began their rise to the pinnacle of American life. The film is not rated.

The Ann Arbor native and award-winning writer will discuss her experiences as a foreigner in China. Her popular memoir, 'Foreign Babes in Beijing,' is being developed into a feature film by Parmount Pictures. DeWoskin will discuss its progress, including updates on casting the film.
