The book I would like to suggest is A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. Unfortunately, it is not yet out in paperback, but I believe it will be soon. It's the story of a diary encased in a "Hello Kitty" lunchbox and sealed in several plastic bags that washes up on the shores of a remote British Columbia island. There it is found, among the seaweed by a writer. The diary is written by a 16 year old Japanese girl who grew up in America and deals with many fascinating themes including bullying, suicide, and the nature of time.

Definitely The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury.. I'm not telling you what it's about so you go and see yourself. ;)

American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell. To me, these stories are about the Michigan beyond Ann Arbor.

Patchett's State of Wonder is also a promising choice.

I would suggest "Glass Screams" by; L.R. Claude for the younger teens on up, it is a gripping story about a young girl and her struggle with a trauma that leaves her a victim in several ways with only herself to be able to handle everything, and overcome it.
