Delivery Update

The AADL delivery truck experienced mechanical problems Friday morning and is being repaired. Evening deliveries were made with a temporary truck. Due to safety and access concerns, the materials loaded on AADL's truck may be unavailable until the truck is repaired. AADL staff would be happy to check the shelves for items that are listed as 'available' in the catalog before you arrive in person to pick them up. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you and appreciate your patience in this matter.

Update: the truck has been repaired and the materials that were on the truck have reached their destinations.

Book Finalists Chosen for Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2009

The theme of the 2009 Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program is The Universe: Yours to Discover. Three books have been chosen as finalists for the community read and are available at AADL. Request the books online or visit the display in the lobby of the Downtown Library.

The three book finalists are available in alternative formats for those who are unable to read or use printed materials due to a physical disability (blindness, macular degeneration, paralysis, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, dyslexia, etc.). Please contact the Library of Michigan Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at 1-800-992-9012 for more information.

The finalists are:

Timothy Ferris, Seeing In The Dark: How Amateur Astonomers Are Discovering the Wonders of the Universe. New York: Simon & Schuster, c2002.

Homer Hickam, Rocket Boys: A Memoir. New York: Delacorte Pres, 1998.

Dava Sobel, The Planets. New York: Viking, 2005.

A selection committee of community leaders, librarians, and students in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area will meet in October to choose the book that will be the focus for 2009.

Community members are encouraged to visit the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti website -aaypsireads.org - and blog about their favorite of the three finalists. Committee members will be reading the blogs.

With our new CD genres you can now browse the CDs at all locations just as easily as at the music store. Whether you're into Country, Jazz, Chamber Music, or Rap, we've got you covered. For those of you who prefer to do your browsing virtually, and to see a list of all the new genres, check out our CD Browsing page. You can seek out old favorites, discover new ones, and place holds on them all from the comfort of your own computer.

Library Closed For Memorial Day

Family Time at the Film Festival

Looking for some family fun at the upcoming Ann Arbor Film Festival? The Ann Arbor District Library will co-present a program for all ages during the Film Festival on Saturday, March 29 at 3 pm at the Michigan Theater. Present your Ann Arbor District Library card at the box office prior to the screening and get $2 off the regular ticket price of $8. New aadl.org features, including Video On Demand!

As you may have noticed, we've added a few new features to aadl.org today. First, we are delighted to offer Video On Demand, which provides instant access to video of past library events and other library productions, such as our Annual Report, presented in video format for the first time! You can also download high-quality or iPod versions of each video, or subscribe to a video or audio podcast through iTunes that will automatically download new video of library productions as they are added to the collection. You can find the new Video On Demand page at , or on the page.

We've also added links at the top of the page that allow visitors to aadl.org to have the site automatically translated into one of 6 languages: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish. Please note that this is machine translation, which means that the quality of the translation will not be as good as if a human had translated the content. However, our polyglot patrons are encouraged to point their mouse at translations that they think could be better; a pop-up balloon with the original text and a link to suggest an improved translation will appear. You can also access the translated versions of the site directly using international language codes like so:

Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2008 Book Chosen

The Eighth Promise by William Poy Lee has been selected as the focus of the 2008 Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads. An eleven-member selection team, composed of community members, eduators, students and librarians from the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area chose The Eighth Promise (Rodale, 2007) from a group of three books, all of which centered on the theme China and America: Bridging Two Worlds.

Lee's memoir gives a rare view of the Chinese-American experience from a mother-son perspective. The story is told in two voices -- the author's and that of his mother. His moving and complex story unfolds simultaneously in his mother's war-torn childhood of China of the 1930s-40s and amidst the housing projects of San Francisco Chinatown of the 1960s-70s.

Ann Arbor Cooks

AADL is proud to present Ann Arbor Cooks, a new online database of local historical cookbooks and heirloom recipes, created in partnership with the Washtenaw County Historical Society, the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor and Ann Arbor Hadassah. The Washtenaw County Historical Society provided the core collection of cookbooks from their archives at the Museum on Main Street and will play a continuing role in enhancing the online collection with more items from their archives. Ann Arbor Cooks also presents a complete set of digital copies of Repast, a publication of the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor. So dig in! You can search or browse the entire collection of recipes; read the cookbooks cover to cover; or send us recipes of your own.
