Ann Arbor Ypsilanti Reads 2008 To Focus On China

The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area has a five-year history of successful community reads programs which encourage all of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti to read one book. University, Library, bookstore and community representatives from both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti have been planning Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2008 for several months.
In 2008, the program will encourage readers of all ages to explore the theme China and America: Bridging Two Worlds. A screening committee, which met throughout the summer, chose three titles for this year’s consideration:
Ha Jin, The Bridegroom: Stories. New York: Pantheon Books, 2000.
William Poy Lee, The Eighth Promise: An American Son's Tribute to His Toisanese Mother. Emmaus, Pa.: Rodale, c2007.
Anchee Min, Red Azalea. New York: Pantheon Books, 1994.
More information about these titles may be found on the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads website at aareads.org – and there is an opportunity for individuals to blog their comments for each title on that site. In late October, a selection committee will choose one of these titles to be the focus of the Read.

Library Will Be Closed For Labor Day

The Downtown Library and all Library Branches will be closed on Monday, September 3 for Labor Day. Regular Library hours will resume on Tuesday, September 4.

Malletts Creek Branch Now Open

Power has been restored, and Malletts Creek Branch is again open for business until 9 PM Wednesday. Regular hours will resume on Thursday. Thanks for your patience!

West Branch will open at 12:00 P.M. today

Last evening around 9:00 PM someone released a chemical agent inside a restroom at the Westgate Branch and at the nearby Kroger store. The buildings were evacuated and closed. While there are suspects, no one has been apprehended. Several people were transported to UM Hospital, treated and released.
The library has been cleared to open by health department and law enforcement officials, and will be open at Noon today, Thursday, July 26.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Jonestown Film Cancelled

Due to today's closure of the Downtown Library, the event featuring the film "Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple" has been cancelled. The event will be rescheduled at a later date.

Downtown Library will Open Wednesday at 1:00 PM

The Downtown library will re-open today, Wednesday, June 7 at 1:00 PM. All programs and events scheduled for this afternoon and evening will occur as planned.
Holds ready for pickup on Tuesday and Wednesday will be extended until Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9.
Fines will not accrue on items returned in dropboxes Downtown while the Library was closed.
This closure was a significant inconvenience for many, and we do apologize.
We are very happy to be able to open the doors today!

Hear a podcast and see photos of the March 7 clearing of the ash trees from the construction site of the new branch library at Traverwood Drive and Huron Parkway on The Environment Report of the Great Lakes Radio Consortium on National Public Radio.
On Wed., March 7, Rex and Andy, two beautiful, black draft horses, pulled dead ash logs from the construction site of the new branch. The event was covered by Lester Graham, producer of The Environment Report. The purpose of the horses' work was threefold: they had much less of an impact on the forest floor than machinery; the wood Rex and Andy hauled will be used as building material and support beams in the new branch library; and the visible support beams will serve as a valuable environmental lesson of the devastation of the emerald ash borer. Nice work, boys!

The ADDY Awards are the world's largest and arguably toughest advertising competition, with over 60,000 entries nationally each year. The Library is proud to announce that the AADL youth events brochure Jump has received two ADDY Awards for event schedules, bookmarks, and illustrations in the categories of Advertising for the Arts & Sciences Campaign and Elements of Advertising (Illustration).
Designed by graphic designer Heidi Sheffield, Jump is a favorite publication around the Library for parents, kids and staff! Heidi also won Best of Show for the 2006 Ann Arbor Book Festival advertising campaign. Congratulations, Heidi!

A Team of Horses To Remove Ash Trees From New Branch Library Site

Individuals passing by Traverwood Drive at Huron Parkway next Wednesday will see an unusual sight. A sturdy team of draft horses will be assisting in the tree removal process as site construction for Ann Arbor’s newest branch library continues.
Early next week, some of the dead ash trees remaining on the site will be cut down. Wednesday, March 7 at 9:00 am, (weather permitting) a team of draft horses from the firm of Johnson Hardwood Floors will arrive. At 10 am, the horses will be begin to pull the dead logs from the site.
The process, which should take several hours, is in keeping with the Library’s pledge of sustainable practices. Removing the dead logs in this way limits root damage to the remaining trees on the site. The ash trees will then be milled and used as building material for the new branch.
The construction manager for the new branch library is O‘Neal Construction, Inc. The architects for the building are Van Tine|Guthrie Studio and the landscape architects are Grissim Metz Andriese Associates.
The new library is being constructed on 4.34 acres of vacant land, located on the southwest corner of Traverwood Drive and Huron Parkway in Ann Arbor, and will be a one-story building of approximately 16,500 square feet. It will serve as a community-based learning center that delivers superior customer service, primarily to the residents of the northeast quadrant of Ann Arbor.

Paul Farmer Lecture Online

The February 12 lecture by Paul Farmer, MD, Founding Director of Partners In Health and the subject of Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, may now be viewed on the website of the University of Michigan William Davidson Institute.
Dr. Farmer is one of the world’s foremost medical anthropologists and physicians and has been working in Rwanda for nearly two years. His lecture was entitled “Building a Health Care Movement: From Haiti to Rwanda.”
