Baby Playgroups at the Ann Arbor District Library typically consist of a 15 minute storytime, followed by 45 minutes of open play. Playgroups are specifically designed for babies up to 24 months and their grown-ups to help with early development.
The storytime is comprised of songs, stories, and rhymes that inspire oral participation and celebrate rhythm and language. Each element of the storytime helps to exercise narrative skills, build vocabulary, and train young ears to hear that words are made up of sound parts.
Next, developmentally-appropriate toys and manipulatives are placed throughout the room, while babies and parents socialize and enjoy themselves. Babies and toddlers practice parallel play at Playgroup, learning to play near others. They increasingly learn to share and slowly experience social development. While possibly not ready to play with each other and share toys fully yet, they are developing the social skills necessary to take that next step.
Most of all, Baby Playgroup is a warm and fun environment in which to learn, explore, and grow. Take a look at the schedule of upcoming Baby Playgroups at AADL and join us!
