Loved It submitted by ColeenT on June 17, 2012, 11:28am This book definitely reminded me of The Bachelor but I loved it. Even though this book is supposed to be dystopian, there aren't many dystopian qualities in the book. I'm assuming that book 2 will contain more dystopian qualities. I loved the romance in this book and foudn it to be quite interesting. This book is a Must-Read!

awesome submitted by harajuku528 on June 19, 2012, 2:59pm its being turned into a tv show! gonna be on the cw (channel 13). its like the hunger games meets the princess diaries?the bachelor!

Bleh. submitted by jmock on July 8, 2012, 9:09pm The idea seems sort of original, but I don't think it's completely developed. Differences between the language and attitude of the different social classes are completely nonexistent. A prince is described to be speaking with "formality," but his grammar is no different from "casual" to "formal." The fact that there seems to be an untold story--with an already adoring boyfriend involved--I feel as if I have been plopped into the middle of an ongoing conversation. Read a couple chapters, then quit. Too flaky.

I wish this book had more teeth submitted by yugure on February 27, 2013, 5:16pm Not a book I'd pick up to read again, and I don't think I'll read the sequel. The love triangle seems too forced, too clearly an author manipulation, and to be honest, I didn't care for either of the love interests. I was more interested in how the women who are Chosen get along, and how class differences would play out among them, but that's not really what this book wanted to be about. It had some of that, but on a very superficial level. I wish this book had more teeth to really dig into the issue.

A surprising read. submitted by mararita on July 24, 2013, 12:04pm I read a lot of the books put out on the teen lit shelves-- which means I end up with a lot of weak characters, immature attitude, and pointless plots. Usually I can't finish most of the books I pick up. So, my expectations were low when I picked up "The Selection".

Overall, I was surprised by the characters. I'm so used to (and tired of) whiny female characters accompanied by idiotic, thick male characters. However, I found this cast of characters likable and realistic. Were they perfect? Nope, but real people aren't supposed to be. Did America always make the best decisions and keep her emotions in check during every second of the book? Nope.

And that's what I liked about it. I appreciated America's perspective and her decisions; even if I wouldn't make the same choices she did, I could easily see other people who would under similar circumstances.

(I also liked the other characters, but since the story is America's, her character is the one you spend the most time with.)

I enjoyed Cass's writing and the world she created. It was a good story and it surprised me-- which is why I appreciate it so much.

Spectacular submitted by gracejean on June 22, 2014, 12:34pm This book was absolutely amazing. The story includes the U.S.A society turned monarchy. I was enthralled by the royalty and caste system. Along with politics is an amazing love story. The book follows main character America through "the selection", a competition to marry to the prince and become queen (something America didn't think she ever wanted). America's story is one of complications and the constant struggle between what head and heart. With characters so real you'd expect them to jump off the page, and a twisting plot filled with love and rebellion, "The Selection" is a must read.

AMAZING submitted by Kadydja13 on July 14, 2014, 11:28am I truly loved this. Best book ever

great submitted by yslee on June 12, 2015, 10:12pm The whole series is a great read, and enjoyable.

Loved it, but a short read. submitted by ArtGirl13 on June 14, 2015, 8:31am I really enjoyed reading it but I probably won't read it again. I would recommend it to anyone who likes romance, but the plot is not great. It's sort of like Hunger Games but with out the killing. It's a dystopian future, but I really enjoyed it because of the romance, not for the writing or the plot.

To die for! submitted by Mustafa Ali on June 17, 2015, 2:17pm I loved this book. It was full with ups and downs, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I have read this book at least 7 times and I never get tired of it!

AWESOME submitted by unknown on June 22, 2015, 1:08pm The entire series is such a great read. I loved America's point of view on what was happening even though her actions weren't always the best choice.

Fell in Love With It submitted by eagles on July 31, 2015, 9:37am This book was actually recommended by a friend, and when I read it, I couldn't put it down. Literally. Whenever I ate, I was literally gobbling my food up, just so I can continue reading this book! It usually takes me 2-4 days to finish a book, depending on how good it is. The whole series took me two days to finish(the first, second, and third - currently waiting for the heir)! I love it! I recommend it to everyone out there! If you haven't read this book, then you don't know what the definition of a good book is. ;)

I couldn't put it down! submitted by sophiefonte on May 5, 2016, 6:09pm I loved this book I will definitely be reading the sequel!!

Great Series submitted by lgobrien on June 18, 2016, 8:29am A few years back, I finished the summer game reading challenge, proud of myself for reading all those books! When I got to choose a book, I chose The Selection, thinking it looked like an interesting read. After finishing it, I couldn't wait to read the next books in the series! This book is a romance novel with just the right amounts of suspense and adventure.

AWESOME AND WONDERFUL submitted by sophia_2005 on June 16, 2017, 9:55am This is a great book overall. I do think that the love seems a little forced, and the characters are not very relatable for me, but it is still a great book. You should definatley read this.

Great submitted by LijunHan on July 6, 2017, 8:55am A great book! Really interesting

Loved it submitted by DL on August 6, 2017, 1:52pm Didn't want to put this book down. Reminded me of the Bachelor in the selecting of a girl to marry but better.

Dystopian bachelor submitted by demunnik on June 17, 2018, 11:17pm Very interesting dystopian take on " the bachelor" type completion.

My favorite series submitted by caherne on August 1, 2018, 11:51am I love this series so much! I love that America always stands up for what she believes in. The love triangle gets better if you read the whole series. The books are very interesting and hooked me from the start.

amazing read submitted by WiseRaven on August 26, 2018, 7:43pm a few years ago i got this from the summer game program and quickly read it all the way through. this coming from someone who doesn't particularly like super romancey books and would prefer adventure to romance, i really liked this mixture of the bachelor and the hunger games. there are many other components in addition to the romance, which is why i think i liked it so much. would highly recommend.

The Bachelor meets YA Dystopian submitted by hdcooper on June 17, 2019, 1:32pm As long as you read this book through the lens of a young adult romance, it’s great! Of course it does suffer from all the tropes of the current YA Romance genre, but overall I found it a lighthearted enjoyable read. The main characters are likable and the pacing was good.

Pretty good submitted by c_zhang on June 27, 2019, 10:44pm This tackles romance pretty well. It's interesting enough that the romance aspect doesn't overpower the other aspects of this book.

Speechless submitted by xiaoyun zhang on July 21, 2019, 10:57pm This was such a great series! I spent all night reading this and it was totally worth it. If you like the show " The Bachelor" or the "The Bachelorette", then this series is for you!

Romantic submitted by O'Eily on July 26, 2019, 9:25pm Really romantic and a great adventure.

The Selection submitted by Varshini on July 30, 2019, 2:10am I didn't think I'd like this book, but it was actually surprisingly good. It's kind of one of those book where you either really like it or don't like it much at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 5/5 stars.

Good book submitted by jasonc1177 on July 31, 2019, 7:55pm this book is great. Very interesting

Really good submitted by sbeegees on August 13, 2019, 7:36pm Ordinary I don’t like more romance oriented ya novels, but this book was amazing. While it is still a romance, the selection still has focus on building a dystopian world. Would recommend.

The Selection submitted by alicegz on August 14, 2019, 9:20pm Such a great first book in the series!

I just can't put it down submitted by taherne on May 12, 2020, 4:20pm The idea of the book is so unique and I love it so much. I really like how we get to see America's life before and after she enters the palace. Such a well written book

Book Review: The Selection submitted by yanxia cao on July 20, 2020, 11:07am America Singer, a lowly five, destined to be a singer and musician and only those two. Life as a five doesn’t give you much choice in education and career paths. America meets Aspen, a six, who is barely able to stay full and eats three meals a day. America is ready to live life as a six with Aspen until the Selection letter is sent to her house and Aspen and her mother, hoping for life as one, forced her to enter the Selection. America doesn’t mind, tens of thousands of girls are yearning for the spot, America doesn’t think she will get in so she enters the Selection just to make her mother and Aspen happy. Unexpectedly, she gets chosen to be one of the 35 girls that get to meet and hopefully marry Prince, soon King Maxon. Right before she is chosen though, Aspen breaks it off ashamed that he is not good enough for America. America goes to the Selection as a way to keep the distance between Aspen and her. She befriends Maxon instead and tells him all the secrets of the 35 girls, as she is only there to provide for her family. But as time goes on their friendship turns into something more. With Aspen, southern and northern rebels, King Clarkson, Maxon, and Celeste, can America make the right decision? What will America do? Read The Selection to find out (you will have to read two additional books to learn about the WHOLE Selection).

amazing submitted by mlrober on June 12, 2021, 9:18am this is such a good series and you can not put this book down once you start reading it

Loved this book! submitted by Celia Begosso on June 25, 2021, 10:41pm A great book that got me out of my reading slump!

Great book submitted by Yelenabm_15 on July 7, 2021, 10:58pm I discovered this book a few years ago, I thought it was boring but it was amazing.
This story never gets old its the perfect start to the series and it gave me some inspiration to start my own!.
Kiera Cass is an amazing writer and I highly recommend this book.

Everything in this book is amazing, The love triangle between Aspen, Maxon, And America, Her family, and the selection girls specifically Kriss, Elise, Marlee, Celeste and America.
If you love Romance and are looking for a book to read that wont get you bored in seconds I totally recommend this and the rest of the series.
(Two more books after this!)

AMAZING BOOK submitted by EuniceWe on August 17, 2021, 1:27pm This book is REALLY good. The Selection is more of a laid back type of book but is such an entertaining read as well as having shocker moments. This series is probably one of my favs and the one I always go back to. I highly recommend this series as well as all the other books Kiera Cass has written.

A great YA read submitted by amandasaurus on June 15, 2022, 10:47pm So excited this is slotted to become a film! More detailed than I expected, the little details to round out the sort of post apocalyptic societal norms was a happy surprise. The whole series is really wonderful-so much more adventurous that I expected, with a bit of teenage romance for sure.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT submitted by cheon.eunjae on June 25, 2022, 8:26pm This was an amazing book to read. It is definitely one of the best romance/dystopian books I've read. It is a teen romance about a young girl who just wants to be with her *secret* boyfriend but gets Selected and must try to impress the Prince (Maxon).

Amazing! submitted by morgan.chen on June 14, 2023, 10:35am This book was super good! In summary (without spoilers!) , America gets chosen to compete for the prince. But, at the castle she realizes the prince might not be the only one she wants. The author did a really good job with the plot, and portraying the characters. It’s not essential to read the other books, since they pretty much took everything successful from the first book, but I would recommend it!

Wonderful World Building submitted by Tess332 on June 15, 2023, 4:35pm This might be some of the most interesting world building in a YA novel. The writing and characters are not written to the same standard of other popular YA books. I would highly recommend based on the story and world. This book is infectious and one of the few books I have finished in one sitting.

Amazing submitted by Riley13 on July 5, 2023, 8:50pm The love triangle in this story kept me on my toes. America really went back forth between guys. Perfect fantasy story!!
