"From the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning author--now in the fiftieth year of her remarkable career--a brilliantly observed, joyful and wrenching, funny and true new novel that reveals, as only she can, the very nature of a family's life. "It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon." This is the way Abby Whitshank always begins the story of how she fell in love with Red that day in July 1959. The whole family--their two daughters and two sons, their grandchildren, even their faithful old dog--is on the porch, listening contentedly as Abby tells the tale they have heard so many times before. And yet this gathering is different too: Abby and Red are growing older, and decisions must be made about how best to look after them, and the fate of the house so lovingly built by Red's father. Brimming with the luminous insight, humor, and compassion that are Anne Tyler's hallmarks, this capacious novel takes us across three generations of the Whitshanks, their shared stories and long-held secrets, all the unguarded and richly lived moments that combine to define who and what they are as a family"-- Provided by publisher.

So moving submitted by gnap on June 21, 2015, 4:29pm the structure of this book reinforces the message, that as we age, memories & feelings ascend over chronological time in importance. the prose is plain; the metaphors simple & infrequent & resonate deeply with characters & theme. the author preps for one death, then renders it & its aftermath beautifully. this book cannot be read & fully understood by anyone under 40 years of age who anticipates a full life ahead.

Another submitted by kferguson on August 20, 2016, 7:11pm Another great novel from Anne Tyler

Good but could be better submitted by mickplu on July 8, 2018, 8:21am An enjoyable but not remarkable story of 4 generations of a family and the house they love. My favorite scene was Junior and Linnie Mae's fight over the porch swing. She secretly paints it blue, a color he considers low class in porch furniture. He takes it to have the color professionally stripped (also behind her back) and arrives home to find blue paint strewn across the porch and sidewalk.

Good submitted by TLW1998 on July 28, 2019, 11:04pm I agree with the reviewer above. It was an enjoyable, but unremarkable story about a family.
