I think the author spent waaay to much time on the romance--it goes very slowly in the middle. That being said, I think the character development is great considering how many main characters there are. I fact, I've read books in which all the characters are exactly the same in every way. I think this was the reason why some time was spent on the romance and just simply sitting and talking around. So much is happening at once, but you can still follow it. It was an interesting book, but not one I could read all over again

Good but bogged down with too much unnecessary romance submitted by yugure on February 27, 2013, 4:01pm Riordan is at his best when he's writing action scenes and when he's respinning old Greek/Roman/world myths into people for Percy and his friends to meet, or events to happen, or places to go. I always particularly enjoy the way he makes them fit into the present day (like the Amazon warriors running the Amazon company in a previous book, and the Justin Bieber-ish fan cult around Narcissus in this book). Annabeth's encounter with her foe (no spoilers) at the end of the book is wonderfully tense and exciting. Luckily, there's a lot of action and new myth in The Mark of Athena. Unluckily, there's also a lot of romance and angsty teenagers, which is not something Riordan is particularly good at writing. A couple chapters worth of "Percy never wanted to let Annabeth out of his sight again" or "Piper looked at Jason and thought herself so lucky" (not actual quotes, just approximations) could have been cut to create a really fast-paced, exhilarating book. As is, the book is sometimes a drag to get through.

#1 FAN submitted by EffieTrinket on July 2, 2013, 7:31am BEST. BOOK. EVER. I am obsessed with this book. I have a camp half-blood t-shirt and I made a house of hades t-shirt. I am counting down the days until the house of hades comes out (october 8th.) today is 98 days. I made an SPQR cake for Jason Grace's Birthday (July 1st, yesterday). I framed the cover of the house of hades. I'm saving money to go to the release party. I memorized which god is which from Greek to Roman form. This is the best book in the history of books (better than Hercules's guide to the Mare Nostrum) and a must read for Rick Riordan fans. # 1 FAN. Some comments say there is too much romance, but I like it that way. I don't think the series would be as good without it. Some comments also say that the book took a while to finish, but since this book is so good you don't even notice how thick it is until you finish and you want it to be longer. My suggestion to readers is to read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series first. All five books. Otherwise this series (the Heroes of Olympus) doesn't make as much sense and you won't enjoy it as much as you could. If you like this book and the series you should also read Fablehaven (book one through 5) and the Kane Chronicles (book 1 through 3). If you've read Percy Jackson and the Kane Chronicle than read Rick Riordan's knew book The Son of Sobek (including a House of Hades sneak peak. Hazel narrates!!!!!! I love Hazel) anyway this book is great and has such a huge cliffhanger at the end that it's making me scream for the next book (litterly, scream). I can't believe the end!!! It's so romantic and sad and treacherous, I can't even believe it. I'm not going to give the ending away but once you read it you'll know what I mean. GIVE ME THE HOUSE OF HADES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved Percabeth in the first series, but in Mark of Athena I thought all the romances (Jiper, Percabeth, Frazel etc.) were cheesy. I felt like the characters were over dramatic about their boyfriend/girlfriend.

The romance was WAY to dramatic and there actions weren't as realistic as the first series. I mean I know by now there used to scary monsters and that stuff but if some thing surprises them they should still jump or do something. Overall it was a really great book and, if you haven't already, GO READ THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, I forgot to add this book is fantasy and action so if you like thoughts genres you should DEFINITELY read it. If you don't like fantasy you should still go read the book like I said before, who knows you might like it!

Rick Riordan does an excellent job having multiple main characters and yet giving ample time to each one of them. None of the characters feels underdeveloped or like they get too much or too little time in the spotlight. Highly recommend!

It's...awkward. Just like these heroes getting used to each other. It also shows some of Riordan's narrative weaknesses, particularly with female characters. Still fun to read, but it doesn't live up to the first two books in this series. 3/5 stars.
