In the city of Egunu, Nigeria, fifteen year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja lead a somewhat cloistered life. Their father is a wealthy businessman, they live in a beautiful home, and attend private school. But, through Kambili's eyes, we see that their home life is anything but harmonious. Her father, a fanatically religious man has impossible expectations of his children and his wife, and if things don't go his way he becomes physically abusive. Not until Kambili and Jaja are sent away from home for the very first time to visit their loving aunt, does Kambili's world begin to blossom. But when a military coup threatens to destroy the country, the tension in her family's home escalates, and Kambili must find the strength to keep her loved ones together.

Great insight book submitted by Xris on June 16, 2018, 8:36pm This was another book that has given me insight into how other people live and their experiences. Very hard to read in some parts because of the abuse that was happening. Wanted to read it because my exchange daughter had to read it for a class and I wanted to be able to talk to her about it.
Very powerful story submitted by ogehrlich on July 7, 2020, 11:59am This was a very insightful, powerful, and well written story. It lured me in from the first chapter and I couldn't put it down!
Highly Recommended

Ever since Americanah (and seeing a clip of her with Trevor Noah) I have been devouring Adichie's books and loving each one more than the last. I consider this story to be a girl's coming-of-age story, which are very rare (especially when it's not all about a sexual quest). The characters are not caricatures, so even the ones doing horrible things also have their good qualities, which makes them more interesting and the relationships obviously complicated. I would actually like to see Adichie write another book about these same characters down the road 10 years or so.
