Moving submitted by marshd on October 16, 2010, 4:27pm The Irish legends mix well with this fantasy. The story is interesting and pulls you along; the characters are vivid and quite easy to relate to. Overall, I'd say it's a fantastic read for teen or adults.

Fairy tale excellence submitted by klsyking on July 20, 2011, 8:23am There are so many fairy tale retellings out there, but I have yet to find any except this book written about the seven swans. This story takes that already great story above and beyond expectations. I have read this book several times since I was young and it still retains its power.

Irish Mythology submitted by smariej on July 31, 2012, 12:47pm Juliet Marillier is an excellent writer. She has done other books as well that take an in-depth, personality/psychological study of the characters in legends and myths. She also tends to pick myths that are not as commonly known, while grounding the fantastical worlds in historical realities of daily life. This is the start of the Seven Swans series, and I'm definitely going to be working on the rest of the books!

Irish legend submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 23, 2013, 11:49pm Based on a traditional Irish story about a young woman who saves her brothers who have been turned to swans by magic, "Daughter of the Forest" is the first of the Sevenwaters series about a Pagan family that uses magic to protect their land and its inhabitants, both human and supernatural.
Like in the story "The Six Swans," on which it is based, Sorcha must remain silent for years while she weaves shirts out of nettles for her six older brothers who have been turned to swans in order to bring them back to their human form.
SPOILER ALERT: The novel includes a rape, murders of the rapist and another person, and a bit of downplaying the traumatic results of the rape. So, this novel has some disturbing parts that some readers may wish to avoid.

Good submitted by zmclaugh on July 30, 2018, 4:43pm A long retelling of "The Wild Swans." I enjoyed this.
