Examines how architecture has evolved over time by looking at buildings that typify each period, from the pyramids and the Parthenon to the Chrysler Building and the Sydney Opera House.
"We spend most of our lives in buildings. We make our homes in them. We go to school in them. We work in them. But why and how did people start making buildings? How did they learn to make them stronger, bigger, and more comfortable? Why did they start to decorate them in different ways? From the pyramid erected so that an Egyptian pharaoh would last forever to the dramatic, machine-like Pompidou Center designed by two young architects, Patrick Dillon's stories of remarkable buildings--and the remarkable people who made them--celebrates the ingenuity of human creation. Stephen Biesty's extraordinarily detailed illustrations take us inside famous buildings throughout history and demonstrate just how these marvelous structures fit together." -- Publisher's description.

The story of buildings. submitted by JY 2005 on June 14, 2020, 7:27pm This book goes into great detail about different types of buildings and what their purpose is and how they are suited for their location.
Amazing illustrations! submitted by thesrays on June 18, 2024, 7:37pm My favorite books to read to my kids are ones that I actually enjoy too. This book qualifies. The text is informative, and the buildings are ordered in historical order, so this book does actually read like a story of buildings...as its title suggests. However, for me, the illustrations steal the show. The peel-back layers reveal construction secrets, which is particularly fascinating to me in some of the famous buildings mentioned that I've actually visited in person. Highly recommend!
