When Aref, a third-grader who lives in Muscat, Oman, refuses to pack his suitcase and prepare to move to Michigan, his mother asks for help from his grandfather, his Siddi, who takes Aref around the country, storing up memories he can carry with him to a new home.
"Aref Al-Amri does not want to leave Oman. He does not want to leave his elementary school, his friends, or his beloved grandfather, Siddi. He does not want to live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his parents will go to graduate school. His mother is desperate for him to pack his suitcase, but he refuses. Finally, she calls Siddi for help. But rather than pack, Aref and Siddi go on a series of adventures. They visit the camp of a thousand stars deep in the desert, they sleep on Siddi's roof, they fish in the Gulf of Oman and dream about going to India, and they travel to the nature reserve to watch the sea turtles. At each stop, Siddi finds a small stone that he later slips into Aref's suitcase--mementos of home." -- Publisher's description.

A little tour of the Middle East submitted by Xris on July 2, 2022, 1:50pm Every time they mentioned a place or thing in the Middle East, I would look it up on the internet to see it for myself. It was like having a little trip there myself. I would like to go to Oman and see all the places Aref and his Sidi went, plus the places they wanted to go. Also a nice bonus that Aref was moving to Ann Arbor with his parents, so they could go to U of M and he could go to King Elementary! For younger kids, but I still enjoyed this book!
