COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Shoots Wide of the Net submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:51am This book has some solid ideas behind it, but its balance of moral lessons and engaging storylines is a bit skewed toward the former, at the expense of the latter. The characters seem to have a history behind them, and while the story works as a standalone I felt like I was missing some important context that could have made the story more effective beyond the educational element that sits at its forefront. I also found it a bit unlikely that all of these kids would not only be interested in hockey but apparently quite skilled on skates despite not having a nearby ice rink and possibly living in northern California (given a reference to San Francisco being a quick drive away). These elements threw me out of the story and left me confused, and the rest of the book reads like an after-school special. I didn’t find this particularly engaging.
