Traditional version, brilliant illustrations

If you don't like to read your little ones traditional versions ("They're too hard-core - read danger-filled, sad, graphic - for young children!" is what I (as a pre-school teacher) have frequently heard of this Grimm's tale) you will be robbing yourself, and them, of the opportunity to appreciate the loving detail TSH has imbued her retelling of Little Red. Each page is decorated with many of the images mentioned, and a few that aren't. Her Little Red has a waif-like quality, the mother looks suitably capable, the recovered grandmother cheerful and determined. The illustrations depict an absolute dream of cottage style, the forest is both lovely and a bit foreboding. I have been reading this edition to children of varying ages since it was first published way back in the 1980s.
My only caveat is the archetype of the wolf as evil incarnate. My workaround when reading aloud is a quick explanation that wolves are not innately evil but because humans don't always understand wolf behavior, they are often portrayed as such to symbolize that which terrifies us.
