Quick Thoughts on Sabriel submitted by daviteo on March 24, 2007, 2:05am Sabriel seemed to be a sort of cross between Harry Potter and Ender's Game, with a female heroine. It was a little long, and the middle lagged; however, the beginning and especially the ending were fantastic. Recommended.

Wonderful submitted by Daniel Saltzman on January 21, 2010, 3:49pm Sabriel is a fairly original growing-of-age story that takes place in an alternate universe setting similar to post-industrial America or Europe that also has a land of magic on one side. Excellent story and the sequels don't disappoint, either.

My Personal Favorite submitted by marshd on April 26, 2010, 7:39pm Sabriel is one of the most original and imaginative pieces of teen fantasy around. The storyline is well-developed, the characters interesting and realistic, the writing done well, and the premise entirely enchanting. As writing that predates such new "classics" as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, it contains much that should be admired.

It is a must-read for anyone who enjoys teen or young adult fantasy. Also check out the other two books of the trilogy!

Good submitted by 0liviap0pp on August 13, 2011, 7:56am A good, great read.

Cool magic submitted by lbootzin on July 20, 2015, 2:30pm Very interesting, well developed universe with a fascinating magic system.

Great submitted by anacoluthon on July 12, 2018, 9:51am Great world-building and a wonderful female protagonist. One of my favorite series as a teen.

An old friend submitted by lauramason89 on August 25, 2019, 11:01pm I've gone back to this book again and again, after first reading it as a middle schooler. I reread every few years, and I desperately wish Garth Nix would write more Old Kingdom stories .... I have read Goldenhand and Clariel but I still want more.

Sabriel submitted by wallems on June 15, 2023, 12:10pm Truly incredible world building! One of my all time favorites ever. If you're looking for fantasy more along the lines of flawed-hero-learns-through-messing-up maybe this isn't the book for you but as a kid I super enjoyed how awesome and tough Sabriel was

Sabriel submitted by hrgray on August 2, 2023, 10:25pm I first read this book as a teenager, but having recently reread it as an adult, I think it holds up well even excluding the nostalgia factor. Sabriel is a powerful and memorable protagonist, and the fantasy world of the Old Kingdom has a very unique feel to it.
