Good book submitted by Noahwebb on June 23, 2014, 6:20pm My mom read this book and I heard a speech abute it and it's a good book!!!!

Love this book!! submitted by airgood on June 15, 2015, 4:30pm The author really captures the feeling of rowing and what it means to be part of a crew. I love that the rowing story is interspersed with discussion about the changes happening in Europe at the time and life in the Pacific Northwest. It provides a very interesting perspective of this period!

Loved it submitted by johnbiancke on July 8, 2015, 9:02pm What a great story !!!! Should be required reading for history student and for young adults who might have a motivation problem

Beyond epic. submitted by tbbrown76 on August 21, 2015, 1:22pm Excellent teamwork book. Good account of Dustbowl, Depression and Hitler. A must read.

Inspiring Story submitted by petermorville on June 26, 2016, 7:52am An inspiring story about young athletes succeeding against all odds; also provides interesting perspectives on the rise of Hitler.

Outstanding submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 23, 2017, 3:22pm This was outstanding. The language is absolutely stunning, the detail drew me in, the stories of the individuals (coaches, crew, girlfriends, boat builders, Germans, and more) gave breadth and depth and character to what could have been a straight-forward "sports story." This is another of the current genre of nonfiction that is so well written that it reads like a novel. I didn't know that much about rowing, but now I'm hooked. What other sport uses as much energy as playing two basketball games back-to-back but in 6 minutes (an Olympic 2000-meter race)? A phenomenal book.

Amazing! submitted by mickplu on June 18, 2018, 9:00pm Wow! The amount of research and detail that went into this book is amazing. One of the most interesting accounts/aspects of the Great Depression and WWII, told in an underdog wins the gold style. The photos and quotes from the boy's and coach's journals added to the account. Joe Rantz, the main character, being one of the few "boys" that was alive during the research gathering, is unforgettable for his hardship and what he ultimately accomplishes.

Rowing and the 30's and Germany submitted by sdunav on June 18, 2018, 11:41pm Sometimes a bit dry (unless you're really into rowing and sculls and the University of Washington), but often fascinating, especially when it comes to the Great Depression and Germany in the years before WWII - and especially Germany's role in the 1936 Olympics.

Good read submitted by gxtan on August 4, 2018, 12:12pm Engaging read, kept interest even during sections about the more technical aspects of rowing. Also gave insight into a past time - life during the Great Depression, right before WWII, but when you could still scrape together college tuition/room and board by working a summer job.

Lives up to the hype submitted by jayzwack on August 11, 2018, 9:33pm Really enjoyable. Something for everyone.

Enjoyable Read submitted by ken on August 20, 2019, 11:45am Several people had recommended this to me over the past few years, and it finally made its way to the top of my list. I very much enjoyed learning about Seattle in the Depression, Germany between the wars, and the sport of rowing. I’d never paid much attention to rowing sports, but I have a much deeper appreciation for those athletes’ incredible fitness and endurance. A marvelous bit of history, well-told.

Inspiring submitted by Umich2023 on August 30, 2019, 8:36pm This book was such an inspiration and makes me want to learn to row!

Bout submitted by Anthany on July 17, 2020, 1:35pm Nine bout

Good read submitted by JennJenn on August 4, 2020, 10:49pm This was a great story of hard teamwork despite daunting circumstances throughout.

Sports history submitted by m steve on July 4, 2021, 9:04pm An enjoyable narrative that is well worth the read.

Fascinating History submitted by emroon on August 15, 2021, 3:54pm I really enjoyed reading this book about the Olympic Rowing crew. The stories of the individual rowers put a lot in perspective about sports, the time period, the Great Depression and more. Despite knowing the outcome the suspense and excitement the book were palpable. Loved it!
