Couldn't get into it submitted by kelleyc on June 22, 2016, 12:51pm I couldn't get into this novel at all. I can see the appeal, but it just wasn't for me. Very dry, very disconnected.
Enjoyed it submitted by EJZ on June 15, 2018, 10:43pm It took at least 75 pages to make heads or tails of this book but once I was in, I fell in love. It's such a beautiful original take on the brotherhood of man, and it's as relevant today as it was when first released.
Fascinating premise, beautifully handled submitted by terpsichore17 on July 10, 2018, 2:38pm High ratio of philosophy/economics to storyline, and *yet* it's done in such a way that I want to read *more* philosophy and economics, so as to ruminate at greater length on the concept of a society without possessions, right next to a world that allowed that society to isolate itself for experiment's sake.
One of the best science fiction novels I have ever read! submitted by TeacherN on June 17, 2020, 10:27am This is one of the best science fiction novels I have ever read. And I am surprised that I only just recently heard of it. At a time when we as a nation are rethinking the role of police and punishment, and many are coming to terms with the damage uncontrolled capitalism has wreaked on our planet, this novel, written in 1974, is incredibly pertinent. Before this, I had only read LeGuin's short story, "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelias" - which is also relevant to our current age.
