"When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl. George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part . . . because she's a boy. With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. George submitted by PizzaPuppy on December 15, 2015, 3:06pm One of my favorite books published this year is George by Alex Gino. In their debut novel, Gino expertly crafts the story of George, a transgender girl coming to terms with her identity.

In this moving and heartwarming novel, we follow George as she attempts to land the lead role of Charlotte in her school play of Charlotte's Web. There's only one problem: the lead role is a "girl's role". George is not a boy who "wants to be a girl", but a girl in a world where no one can see her. George feels that if she were to play the role of Charlotte, the world would see her as she truly is and not as she appears outwardly. The book brilliantly weaves together George's intensely private and public struggles, and the reactions of her family, friends, classmates and the world at large.

Intended for a middle grade audience (fourth to sixth grade), this simple but important story never comes across as a lesson. Instead, George speaks to the difficulties that transgender members of our community face on a regular basis. Gino approaches the subject with a clear and positive outlook on a sometimes tricky topic, and ultimately delivers a profound story of an individual trying to find their place in the world.

Interested in similar stories? Give Gracefully Grayson a try. This book tells the story of Grayson Sender, a sixth-grader coming into her own as a transgender girl. This novel is intended for a slightly older crowd (for sixth grade and older), but is another wonderful story about discovering your identity and staying true to oneself.

Great for late elementary grades submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 11, 2016, 7:57pm Recommended by my 10 year old daughter. This is an excellent story about a trans kid trying to figure herself out, and figure out how to tell friends and family that she's in the wrong body. Some take this well, and some tell her that she must be wrong. She gets bullied, and she gets to try out a new way of being. It's delightful, and part of a wonderful genre of books for kids that explore what the world looks like from a perspective that may be very different than the reader's (_Wonder_ and _Out of My Mind_ come to mind for the mid- to late- elementary set).

Very well written, sure to open discussion and build empathy. Highly recommended. Another great pick by my kids.

Great book to educate submitted by Xris on June 16, 2018, 8:24pm Always love to find books to help educate people about the gender/sexuality spectrum. Very enjoyable!

Truly great book submitted by ryan.lorenz on June 22, 2019, 1:10pm very inspiring. I loved George's perseverance.

George/Melissa is a Great Book! submitted by EJNelson on July 10, 2022, 9:56pm I think this book is very important for people who aren't transgnder to read. It really makes you understand what it's like to be transgender, and how we can support transgender people.
Besides it's message, "Melissa/George" is also beautifly written, and helps you feel perservirence in your own struggles.
This book is a good read for all ages, and especially meaningful for those who have yet to figure themselfs out (like me).

4/5 submitted by JessicaIJ on July 17, 2023, 10:02pm i read this book back when it was called george, and it was one of my first real exposures to trans people. i loved the story and how she becomes melissa at the end.
