Blows Its Top submitted by SBNB on August 6, 2015, 10:30pm This book is about how an underwater volcano works and how it can form a new island. The story’s not bad and it’s interesting too.

Disappointing Latter-Day Tie-In submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 9:47am This book is a spinoff from the original series and a direct tie-in to the television show, and unfortunately it misses the mark in its attempt recapturing the magic of either. The story itself follows the typical Magic School Bus formula, with Ms. Frizzle’s class on an epic field trip adventure, but the educational content is buried as deeply as the magma that most of the class finds within a deep underwater canyon and is somewhat opaque even when you can locate it. I did enjoy the contrast between the students who stick with the bus and the pair who stay on the surface of the water, which plays on some well-established characteristics among the cast while emphasizing the importance of both direct observation and book-based research. The illustrations, however, have a rough and unfinished quality to them, with well-known characters such as Arnold nearly unrecognizable even when viewed close up and few clarifying illustrations of the scientific principles that should form the core of the book. The best Magic School Bus stories have an effective mix of adventure and education, and this book falls a bit flat on both accounts, with little in the way of either plot surprises or scientific information.
