Touching submitted by alexaeaster on June 17, 2013, 7:19pm A touching story of a young girl. This is a great book.

pioneer fiction submitted by camelsamba on June 30, 2016, 8:25pm I read (listened to) this because I recognized the title as a Newbery winner. I'm wavering between "it was okay" (2 stars) and "I liked it" (3 stars). It was an award winner, after all! But not really my cup of tea. It's definitely dated in many ways - not just because it's depicting the Civil War era but because of language that was apparently still acceptable in the mid 1930s. I can overlook that as a historical artifact, so that's not really what bothered me. Perhaps it was just too mellow for me. I did like Caddie as a character though, especially when she was showing her compassionate side (for the "half breed" boys whose names have slipped my mind, for her younger sister, for John's tribe, etc.).

Apparently the more recent editions have a foreword that mentions the connection between Caddie and the author's grandmother. That is not in the BOCD, and if it's not in the edition you find you might want to track down another one just for completeness.

AMAZING submitted by czadams on August 19, 2023, 12:25am The character development and storyline is too awesome! I learn so much about myself though the characters!
