Amazing twist submitted by pk on July 10, 2012, 9:43pm A must read for all little girls - and boys! In a twist on the usual tale, the princess tries to rescue her prince from an evil dragon after the dragon burns down her castle and all her clothes - leaving her to wear a paper bag. She is brave and clever enough to save her prince - only to find out the prince isn't grateful for her effort - he's upset because she's dirty. A true classic and a lesson for all about what really matters.

Great! submitted by Zekicmom on July 23, 2013, 9:32pm This is no stereotypical damsel in distress story. The princess can take of herself and knows what really maters. The illustrations are wonderful too.

A Classic That Kind of Shows Its Age submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:42pm This classic picture book finds a princess seeking to avenge a dragon’s attack on her castle. The story set-up is fairly straightforward and simple, but the book’s cleverness (and its lasting appeal, I reckon) comes from the way in which the unnamed princess confronts the dragon and her subsequent rebuff of a (useless) prince. Though the book is fairly old at this point, this approach feels very modern, even if the text and illustrations occasionally show their age. This book still fits well in a modern bookshelf for modern readers, and was certainly an influence for many authors who read it as kids themselves.
