True Grit feels absolutely effortless, from Mattie’s earnest, straightforward, and conversational storytelling style to its no-nonsense, all-plot structure that still leaves time for its primary characters to create complex interpersonal relationships. For all of the events that befall Mattie as she seeks revenge for her father’s murder, the novel is, at its core, the story of three unlikely allies who learn to live with, and even begrudgingly respect, one another, told without sentimentality and feeling all the more realistic because of its simplicity. This is a straightforward, surprisingly feminist Western stripped of all its unnecessary edges, leaving only a sleek, well-crafted book behind.
