A meandering novel of ideas submitted by foilista on June 13, 2023, 9:02am The Rings of Saturn was my third Sebald (after The Emigrants and Austerlitz). For a meandering essay-novel that's about wandering through England and thinking about history, it was gripping. (I call it an essay-novel because Sebald pretty clearly writes from an authorial "I" and also includes photographs that he took.) The thesis of this essay-novel (all the more interesting, since it's set in England!) is that the history of Europe is a history of cruelty. It's interested in the World Wars, extractive colonialism, and the national narratives that attempt to bury both of these histories. The past is buried, for Sebald, but it constantly emerges from the surface.
