Children have always disappeared from Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere ... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced ... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter. No matter the cost.

Intriguing Urban Fantasy submitted by sdunav on June 17, 2017, 9:44am All those stories about doors to other worlds? Explained in this short novel. I was unsatisfied by the end, but am looking forward to other stories in this series

Among the Best submitted by Meginator on June 21, 2017, 9:57pm If you enjoy stories of children and/or teenagers who enter magical portals to other worlds, you will definitely want to read this book about those among them who have returned to our world. This book runs the gauntlet of emotions and is superlative in pretty much every way. The concept, writing, and characters are all solid, and the story moves alog at a good clip; nothing is wasted here and, in fact, I wish there was more!

As a bonus, McGuire includes characters of many gender and sexual identities. Most of all, it's evident immediately that this is a work of passion, an ode to a particular genre of story and a modern extension of a well-known theme.

This book defies explanation: it's one of those books that is good from top to bottom, and I cannot wait to read it over and over again.

I adore Seanan McGuire submitted by Cassildra on June 17, 2018, 11:20pm She's a fantastic writer, and does really well in her genre(s) of choice. I really appreciate her work.

Really creative and original, but the writing needs more work submitted by nickino on July 5, 2018, 9:59am I really like this book and the subsequent two that are out so far in the series. Seanan is really original and creative. The writing needs some more polish, though, it feels like these could be spectacular, and instead they're just good.

Intriguing and fun read submitted by trina05 on August 8, 2019, 12:48am Sometimes an easily digestible piece of fiction fits the bill and Seanan McGuire delivers. I look forward to reading more.

Could have been more but still good submitted by mintaroni on June 28, 2022, 2:25pm A fun short read but I wish a bit more work had gone into it to take this 6/10 up to an 8-10. Still definitely recommend it for the length it is and it's uniqueness.
