A Bad-Ass Book! submitted by Mary Morgan on June 16, 2017, 12:17pm This is a fascinating tale of how an archivist/scholar in Mali collected and cared for thousands of ancient manuscripts from Africa and the Middle East. The drama of saving this collection during major upheaval is a terrific way of helping readers learn about that region's complicated history, politics and religion.

Fascinating and informative submitted by tuttlium on June 19, 2023, 2:04pm As I read this fascinating book, I became rather embarrassed by how little I knew of the region of the world where this book takes place (Mali, in western Africa). I particularly enjoyed learning about Timbuktu as a hub of education and culture within the region over centuries. While Timbuktu has fallen onto hard times, the modern scholars there keep these traditions alive, and they were the ones who took on the monumental task of keeping the area's precious manuscripts safe during recent violence and turmoil.
