Surviving war-torn Sierra Leon, a boy's perspective submitted by arr on July 1, 2013, 11:13am Honest, telling story of lost innocence and how a lone boy survived including frank discussion of life and death decisions; reality of war, the importance of others believing in healing, and how many civilians in war-torn areas have the courage to help others, especially children.

The author did a great job telling his story of how his life transformed from that of a normal boy in Sierra Leone to that of a 13 year old government soldier. Perhaps even more interesting was the process of learning to let go of the brainwashing (because it DOES take brainwashing to get a gentle 13 year old to fire a gun into another human being) and tell his story to the world.

Powerful, visual, and real, this is worth your time. (It would also be a good memoir read for high school students!)
