A secret origin story -- In the land of the blind -- "How can a guy who can't speak English lie?" -- How to harvest a migrant worker -- Accidental capitalists -- Spider-man at the Venetian -- The great treasure hunt -- The long quiet -- A death of interest -- Two men in a boat.
The author of the signature bestseller Liar's Poker explains how the event we were told was impossible--the free fall of the American economy--finally occurred; how the things that we wanted, like ridiculously easy money and greatly expanded home ownership, were vehicles for that crash; and how shareholder demand for profit forced investment executives to eat the forbidden fruit of toxic derivatives.

Complicated Meltdown, Clearly Explained submitted by Sara W on July 31, 2012, 9:42am Michael Lewis does the impossible and makes the mortgage meltdown not only understandable, but readable. By picking out narrative threads of people who took note of the insecure foundation of these mortgages and starting gaming the system by betting on their failure, he creates an intriguing story that would be great fun if it weren't based in reality. I gained a better understanding of the crisis, the elements leading to its climax, the irresponsibility of the big banks and the utter failures of the rating agencies.
