Just OK submitted by thegretch on July 14, 2011, 11:48am This memoir of Patti Smith in the late 60's and 70's was a big let down for me. She lived this incredible life doing cutting edge things and seems like she doesn't know how to write about it. I thought because she is a poet the writing would be better. Although some of the antidotes were interesting I felt like Patti was making a running list of people and places most of the time. I also thought she needed a better editor.
An absolute joy! submitted by ssevick on July 28, 2011, 10:10am This book was one of the most incredible books I've ever read in my life. Patti paints a vivid picture of youth, rebellion and friendship that will have universal appeal for readers of all ages. She tells of the lives of the people she loved, and the tumultuous and culturally fascinating times they lived through, with an astuteness and sensitivity that make this a thoughtful and incredibly endearing read from cover to cover. As a poet, her prose is artful without seeming pretentious, and tender without seeming biased. A riveting read that will surely ignite a passion for this artist amongst new and old fans alike.
Loved it submitted by aohall on July 29, 2015, 4:47pm Patti Smith tells a fascinating story of her youth and path to fame, and of the bond between her and Robert Mapplethorpe. A very interesting look at the artists' culture in New York at the time, and a wonderfully written memoir.

Same years, same age

It’s powerful to look at another young person’s experiences that ran the same years as mine. I had no connection with New York or Patti Smith but the world around us, USA’s climate of unrest, was the same. For her, that bond with Mapplethorpe gave her a chance to see lives up close that I would never see.
I gave this book to my daughter. I thought she’d get the parallel time of my young life. It didn’t impress her at all, that pursuit of self expression was the obsession for Smith and .Mapplethorpe. Rubbing elbows with others who were on that trajectory. I guess trying to explain a time in US history and how it affected ordinary people as well as young people becoming artists, is hard to cast with a big net.
