One night after an evening out, Jason Dessen, forty-year-old physics professor living with his wife and son in Chicago, is kidnapped at gunpoint by a masked man, driven to an abandoned industrial site and injected with a powerful drug. As he wakes, a man Jason's never met smiles down at him and says, "Welcome back, my friend." But this life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife; his son was never born; and he's not an ordinary college professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something impossible. Is it this world or the other that's the dream? How can he possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could have imagined--one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe. -- adapted from Fantastic Fiction website.

Addictive! submitted by llwalsh on June 18, 2017, 8:01pm This book starts off a little slow, but interesting. By the half-way point, you won't be able to put it down!

gripping, cool story submitted by apknapp on August 16, 2020, 6:32pm Tone/writing reminded me an awful lot of Drew Magary's The Hike; also of Andy Weir, though a bit heavier, emotionally. Bent my brain a little, which was fun, but didn't make me really struggle to keep up. Which is really saying something; the whole Schrodinger's Cat thing has only ever annoyed me. So the central plot point of the story could've been a nonstarter for me, but Crouch managed to make it digestible (if not quite believable). I'm a romance junkie, so I also liked that his relationship with his wife was the driving emotional force behind the story.

Amazing submitted by Bobo34 on June 15, 2021, 7:50am As a lover of chemistry and physics, this read was a thrilling fantasy of the multiverse. Almost seems like some of the themes explored may one day be shown true.

Fascinating premise submitted by JulieKurzer on July 18, 2021, 10:56am The beginning is a little slow but the payoff is worth it!

Science Fiction / Thriller Beach Read submitted by PMJ on July 22, 2022, 11:49am I read this book in one sitting. It is reminiscent of Michael Crichton / Andy Weir but with less depth into the science and also much less character development. Definitely a fun read though.

Thought provoking sci-fi submitted by brooksza on July 4, 2024, 2:11am I got really into this once the story got moving. It was quite a page turner but I didn't love the very end. I can't totally put my finger on it, but the last few chapters just didn't work for me.
