"In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. For decades, we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Mason doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is--a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited--"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives"-- Provided by publisher.

Look at your life from a different perspective submitted by zixyxuan on July 15, 2017, 3:04pm The major point this book emphasized was to stop caring about every little detail in your life and instead focus on those ideals and values that actually matter. The subtle shift comes from not being disappointed, but slowing changing your values so that they are more holistic and sustainable to obtain optimal happiness.

In the first couple of chapters, I really didn't like the style of the writing. Even though I knew there was going to be cussing and profane language, it was just so scattered throughout EVERY SINGLE sentence that I became really annoyed. If the author was really trying to get his point across, let me actually read your ideas instead of figuring out what you're trying to say between cuss words. Honestly, that was probably my only problem with the entire book. After trudging through the first two chapters, the rest of the story included well-detailed and emotional narratives that reflected the development of the "prioritizing" philosophy (I'm coining that term instead of the "no-f*uckery" philosophy). The last chapter of the book was very provocative. It really allowed me to take a step back and ask myself if I'm happy with the way my life is if I died tomorrow.

I would recommend the book to people who want to take a look a life from a different perspective. Just keep an open mind and don't let the language bother you too much.

Wow, this is a great book submitted by keldan315 on August 16, 2017, 6:58pm I'm not a huge self-help fan, but wow is this book good. It's very compelling, funny, but also had me rethinking a lot of my own perspective and habits.

Unwise and Ridiculous submitted by KidBlue on January 21, 2019, 4:56pm This an unwise and ridiculous book. It will appeal to the kind of miserable people too frightened to reach out to another, and instead come up with the angry, self-centered defiance of anything that challenges them that is so rampant today. It is the kind of book that defends the kind of rugged American individualism that is now revealed as deplorable. Sadly, there is no paucity of uncaring today.

An okay self-help book for those looking into mediocre self-help submitted by lostoria on July 15, 2019, 5:41pm Quick and easy read; nothing too revolutionary. There were some good points in the book that I enjoyed. There are better books out there for self-help, reflection and growth, but this one is definitely easy for the general public to pick up and read.

s submitted by kscapellie on July 13, 2020, 5:00pm not caring of what anyone has to say about you

Positive submitted by jyballard on July 22, 2021, 2:13pm This book wasn't only about giving no F , it was about giving Fs about only the important things. If you're going to read it, I would recommend the audio book. I thought the narration was great and it was highly entertaining and made me laugh out loud more than once!! The F bomb can be overwhelming.

I liked it! submitted by Abbie D. on June 29, 2022, 2:45pm I've never been much of a self-help book reader but I heard so many good things about it so I decided to try it out! I'm glad I did, there were so many interesting analogies and general advice. I found myself nodding and agreeing with what the author wrote. I recommend giving it a try!

Kinda pointless submitted by emaelshaikh on August 25, 2022, 1:15pm Limited insight

Not as good as "Everything is F*cked" submitted by lizgiessner on August 14, 2023, 8:20pm Mason's earlier book was deeper with lots more to think about and tons of references. This book is more personal story with regard to Mason's growth/lessons learned. For me, it was enjoyable to read but not as impactful as the prior book.
