Mr Norrell -- Jonathan Strange -- John Uskglass.
1806. England is beleaguered by the long war, and centuries have passed since magicians faded from view. But one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell. Proceeding to London, he raises a woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician. Young, handsome and daring, Jonathan Strange is his very antithesis. So begins a dangerous battle between these two great men - which overwhelms that between England and France. And soon their own secret dabblings with the dark arts are going to cause more trouble than they can imagine.

Long but fun submitted by jennifer-ricks on June 13, 2014, 11:49am A long book but a fun story. Sometimes a little hard to keep going with as it seems to diverge a bit and is not totally full of action until the very end.
Not a quick read but worth it! submitted by scarlettsquill on August 5, 2018, 9:16pm If you are willing to take a deep delve into this work, it is vastly rewarding. The detail and richness of this fictional world make it seem real.
strange & norrell submitted by qmomo on July 2, 2019, 5:36pm absolutely delightful novel about, among other things, two magicians trying to bring magic back to its victorian england based world. it's a long book but i got swept right up in it. highly recommended to fans of fantasy fiction and literary fiction alike.
