People and Friends submitted by mkrue on February 13, 2008, 6:56pm Crossing To Safety is a bittersweet study of friendship between two couples, and more importantly a study of the interaction between the people within the couples: the good and the bad. It is rich in detail, true to life, and ends with a death. Stegner's prose flows. I enjoyed it immensely.

***** submitted by johnbiancke on June 28, 2016, 7:58am This book should be on everyone's to read list. It is compelling and beautifully written

Stegner shines submitted by teri on June 20, 2017, 2:18pm An all-time favorite book. Stegner pulls you into the friendship between two married couples (amicitia!), following them from their first meeting as couples, and into old age. Stegner makes the ordinariness of our lives sparkle and come alive.

Loved this book submitted by aprille on June 30, 2019, 12:13pm In the voice of the narrator, Stegner writes: "Since this book is about a friendship, drama expects friendship to be overturned. Something, the novelist in me whispers, is going to break up our cozy foursome . . . Well too bad for drama. Nothing of the sort is going to happen. Something less orthodoxly dramatic is." Later he asks "How do you make a book that anyone will read out of lives as quiet as these?" Stegner does it. This is a beautiful book and since I've read it, I've been telling all of my friends to read it too.

A quiet book from the last century submitted by 21621031390949 on June 16, 2023, 7:41pm A quiet book that brings back memories of earlier times and 20th century writing. I did not love it - as I loved Stegner’s “Angle of Repose” - so I’m a bit disappointed, but Stegner is a powerful writer. The characters are well-developed, but not entirely believable for me.
